Kayaking

Going to the San Juan islands is usually one of the highlights of my year, and this time was no exception.  To mix it up a little bit, Will and I visited Orcas Island, and decided to use a groupon we purchased for kayak rentals. I'm not going to lie, although I only joked about it, I was really hoping that we would spot some whales on our kayak adventure.  However, when we arrived at the rental shop, they had a giant map of the islands posted on the wall, with stickers marking the location of all the recent whale sightings this summer.  Although there were about a hundred sightings marked, I could tell that our kayak journey was going to take us no where near the regular pathway for whales. Heavy sigh.
In the end though, the trip turned out to be well worth it. We saw herons, a bald eagle, and a cute little otter.  The best moment however, was when we came upon some seals sunning themselves on the rocks.  As we got closer they all slipped into the water and started popping up sporadically around our kayak.  It felt like they were playing a game with us.  As soon as you spotted one next to you, it would  pop back down into the water and reemerge behind you.  They were so cute and curious...and almost a little creepy with their beady eyes and stealth water tricks.
After that encounter we stopped at a little beach for a picnic.  Will took a nap, and I took about 300 pictures (only 14 of which I'm sharing, so really count yourself lucky).  Now I'm going to be one of those people that says, if you go to the San Juans you MUST rent kayaks, it's just way too peaceful and beautiful to miss out on.

Keep paddling Will, I'll just take some pics!

Ferry Boats

It's got to be no argument that ferry boats are the BEST way to travel.  What other source of transportation gives you enormous comfy benches that are large enough to take great naps on, while also providing killer views, and vending machines?  Definitely not airplanes!  Someday I'm going to write a great children's book about a kid who stows away on a ferry boat and has awesome adventures...which as I type that I realize that although awesome, ferry boats may be a little short on adventure, but full of relaxing moments with books and cookies.

P.S. Being engaged is even better than ferry boats! If ferry boating is my favorite travel mode, being engaged is so far my favorite relationship status (I'm guessing married might win them all)! My ring is currently being resized (apparently William thinks I have very fat fingers), and I miss it like crazy! Luckily I get it back tomorrow so I that I can get back to bumping into people because I'm too busy staring at it.

More San Juan Islands postings to come!

Mt. Rainier

Mount Rainier holds a lot of memories for me, dating all the way back to picnics and mini-hikes with my family when I was still young.  In the past few years it's become one of my absolute favorite places to hike and camp.  It's just so beautiful! Will and I both had a day off work this week, so we went up for some low-key outdoor adventure. We ate good food, snuggled around a campfire, and had a very memorable moment when we went to a clearing to star-gaze...

Just some fresh-halibut Will had caught a few days earlier...NOM NOM NOM
 Some creek-side dining!

And now I'm engaged...and Mt. Rainier has become all the more special to me!

Here are some ring-pic outtakes for your pleasure...
Doing the single lady dance...NO MORE
"How about this? Does this look good?"

 But seriously...we're stoked :)

If you give a mouse a cookie...

Remember that book from childhood about giving a mouse a cookie that leads to milk, which leads to crumbs, which leads to full on cleaning, which leads to all out mayhem? Well, kind of got the grownup situmation going on for myself right now...

If you give a girl a fabulous pair of black boots from the Nordstrom Anniversary sale...she's probably going to need a fall sweater to wear with them, and to protect that sweater she's going to need a polka dot umbrella, and to hold that umbrella when it's not raining she's definitely going to need the perfect leather clutch... and yeah...things can snowball into absolute mayhem reaaall fast.

I've been very fortunate to have a great job this summer, but I'm going back into budget mode starting...now. No more cookies for me either.

Luckily I've got all this garden goodness to nosh on.

Nasturtium flowers? Delicious! Such a spicy addition to salads.

 Unstoppable tomato plants
